...and now see what we did in 2009 with our 35th Anniversery Highlights!

MARCH

SVREP Hosted a Debate Between Candidates for a Special Election in the California 32nd Congressional District! When President Obama named Congresswoman Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor, a Special Election was held to replace her in the U.S. House of Representatives. SVREP, along with LPN and AltaMed Health Services, hosted a debate for district residents to hear from the major candidates in the special election. SVREP also conducted substantial Get-Out-The-Vote efforts in the district.

SVREP Conducts 1st Annual Trip to Dodgers Spring Training in Arizona! SVREP organized a fun fundraiser by caravanning from Los Angeles to Glendale, AZ to watch the Dodgers in Spring Training before the 2009 regular season. SVREP also organized a meet and greet opportunity for donors with Famed Dodgers Tommy Lasorda, Don Newcombe, Ron Cey, Maury Wills, and received surprise visits with Hall of Fame Spanish Broadcaster Jamie Jarrin and Fernando Valenzuela!

APRIL

SVREP's 10th Annual Su Voto Es Su Voz Golf Classic. SVREP hosted its 10th Golf Classic Golf Tournament in Los Angeles. Donors from all over Southern California enjoyed a round of golf on one of the area's best courses, including driving range privileges and a special luncheon after the fun to award the best golfers in the bunch.

MAY

SVREP Loses One of Its Own. We sadly lost one of our own, long time community organizers in 2009. Ruben Villarreal passed away in early May after battiling various health complications. Said SVREP President Antonio Gonzalez, "An honorable man of ideas, principles, and action, Ruben Villarreal made his contribution at the organic level of Latino politics as a patient, tireless organizer-trainer of our people. After more than thirty years in the 'business' of Latino community politics I can tell you without reservation that such cadres are the rarest of gems."

SVREP Conducts Latino Get-Out-The-Vote Project in San Gabriel Valley for California Special Election. SVREP conducted a massive phone bank, door to door, email, and mail campaign that contacted 22,481 recently registered Latino voters in the US Rep. District 32 special election during the months of April and May. Several hundred volunteers and paid phoners and organizers worked in Baldwin Park, El Monte, West Covina, and El Sereno on the nonpartisan effort. Partner organizations included MAPA, Anahuak, LCLAA, Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana, and Mujeres de la Tierra.

JULY

SVREP Hosts Taste of the America's. SVREP changed up the traditional "rubber chicken" banquet this year and tried something new. The result: a wildly successful Taste of the America's food tasting fundraiser! For this event, SVREP abandoned a traditional program and sponsored a food competition, with guests playing a role in deciding which of the seven participating resturants would win!

AUGUST

SVREP Hosts 35th Anniversery Latino Vote Banquet. SVREP celebrated its 35th anniversary with a capacity-filled banquet in San Antonio. Raising over $100,000, SVREP supporters heard presentations from Gubernatorial hopeful Bill White and many others.

SEPTEMBER

SVREP Honored at Los Angeles Dodger Game for its 35 Years of Service. SVREP was honored before the September 16, 2009 Dodger home game for its 35 years of service. Among the crowd were 350 SVREP supporters, who helped support SVREP's voter registration work by purchasing tickets for the game.

DECEMBER

SVREP Texas launched a massive campaign to register tens of thousands of voters in time for the March 2010 state primary elections. Setting up some 40 plus projects in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Austin, and the Rio Grande Valley SVREP projects have already registered thousands of new voters during the holiday season. Want to get involved?
