CA Latin@ Empowerment Week

From Earth Day (April 22) to Cinco de Mayo (May 5)

What is Latin@ Empowerment Week?

CA Latin@ Empowerment Week is a new initiative of the Southwest Voter Registration Project (SVREP)/Latino Vote 2018 designed to promote the Latino vote in seventy-three (73) suburban and exurban jurisdictions that are transitioning to district elections in the 2016-18 period.

Book ended by Earth Day on April 22 and Cinco de Mayo on May 5, Latino Empowerment Week consists of SVREP sponsored "flash-canvassing" projects in the new districts drawn to include Latino/minority communities with effective suffrage. SVREP leaders and volunteers go door to door registering new voters, educating all on the new election system, and reminding all to vote in the June 5, 2018 primary elections.

CA Latin@ Empowerment Week will register thousands of new voters thru 15-25 flash campaigns and be followed up by an even larger SVREP effort (25-50 campaigns) in summer fall on the eve of the November elections,

Currently the following areas are organizing for Latino@ Empowerment Week: Highland, Hesperia, Fontana, Temecula, Jurupa Valley, San Marcos, Kern County, Vista, Escondido, Carlsbad, Fullerton, and Buena Park.

SVREP Using CVRA to Create Opportunities for Communities 2015-18

Through an alliance with the law firm Shenkman-Hughes SVREP has used the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) to contact 106 cities, school districts and special districts to inform them they were out of compliance with the law and need to discard their current At-large election systems in favor of District election systems.

Since 2016 73 jurisdictions have changed to District systems and 28 are pending. As a result, more than 100 minority communities will have an opportunity in Nov 2018 to elect candidates of their choice to local office for the first time. The jurisdictions contacted by SVREP typically had a history of substantial under-representation of minorities on their elective bodies.

SVREP followed up these CVRA actions with candidate training during the August 2017-February 2018 period for sixty (60) pre-candidates.

Following is a list of the Communities.
